For the millions of men who experience erectile dysfunction (ED) a number of medical solutions are available. In the UK, this includes several different treatments, such as: Sildenafil, Tadalafil and Vardenafil. More commonly known by their brand names: Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, respectively.

These drugs contain the same classification of PDE5 inhibitors and all work in a similar manner. However, there are some important differences, so it’s important to understand how they differ, to make sure you pick the one that is most suited for you.

In this blog post we will take a closer look at Tadalafil (Generic Cialis). It is a fast acting medication with a longer duration, making it one of the most popular ED medications. Below we will answer some of the key questions you may have before taking Tadalafil.

  1. How much should I take?
  2. How quickly will it work?
  3. How long does it last?
  4. What are the side effects?

How much should I take?

Tadalafil can come in various doses of 2.5mg (daily), 5mg (daily), 10mg and 20mg.

10mg is the most common dosage and is the recommended one if you are taking Tadalafil (or Cialis) for the first time. Most men find that 10mg is a sufficient dosage to treat ED and help improve their sexual health. If this does not work for you after at least 4 attempts, and no side effects are experienced, the dosage can be increased to 20mg.

It is important to note that you should not exceed the recommended dosage within a 24 hour time period.

How quickly will it work?

Tadalafil usually takes 30 minutes to start working, therefore it is one of the fastest acting ED medications available in the UK. However, similar to Sildenafil (or Viagra) you first need to be sexually aroused in order to get an erection.

Drinking alcohol will make Tadalafil less effective and might increase the time it takes to take effect. However, unlike Sildenafil, the effectiveness of Tadalafil is not impacted by the food you have recently consumed.

How long does it last?

Tadalafil works for a period of up to 36 hours. This means, that if you are sexually aroused within this period of time, it will help you get and maintain an erection. This is why it is often referred to as “The Weekend Pill”, as it allows the men to have spontaneous sex several times during the 36-hour window.

What are the side effect of Tadalafil?

Like all medications, there are possible side effects. Most men who take Tadalafil for ED experience no side effects. However there are some common side effects you should be aware of.

  • Headache
  • Back pain
  • Muscle aches
  • Pain in arms and legs
  • Facial flushing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Indigestion

Rarer side effects include:

  • Fainting
  • Seizures and passing memory loss
  • Swelling of the eyelids
  • Red eyes
  • Sudden decrease or loss of hearing
  • Hives (itchy red welts on the surface of the skin)
  • Penile bleeding
  • Presence of blood in semen
  • Increased sweating

Relative to other ED medications, Tadalafil has been found to have comparatively fewer side effects. Often men who experience common side effects such as headaches or nasal congestion from other medications, find that Tadalafil is preferable for them.

If you are worried about any side-effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
